Half-caste, mixed race, dual heritage, inter-racial. I don't like any of these terms although of these we use 'mixed race'. What do you think about them? Have you come across a more positive way of describing 'our' children?

Re: Half-caste children?
Sun, May 30, 2004 - 5:03 PMI do not feel it is about the label more about how it is put across. I prefer mixed race, because it is a more open term. Dual heritage is fine, but what if the mix is more than 2??
This is a hard question to answer, so I will think on it some & prehaps we can think of some

Re: Half-caste children?
Sun, October 30, 2005 - 1:19 PMI describe my children as culturally mixed. I do not really consider mixed race a particularly good term as Race is an antiquated term popularised by the Third Reich and neo nazi's. There is only one race the human race and it doesn't split up into any sub categories. Ethnicity is a valid description also but I really resent the use of the word and I feel that it's hijacked our cultural perceptions for waaay too long. Half-caste I can only identify as a derogratory term; growing up in England it was a sucky ineffectual description banded about by a generation who didn't give a damn or who genuinely didn't know any better!! I think it's time for the generation who grew out of this epoch to start defining themselves. My daughter defines herself as African, German and English; I haven't hit her with any p.c.ness, I'm leaving her to slowly evolve and create her own identity since she is her own person and has chosen this description of herself by herself; I am only a fragment of who she is - her true self will come out in time and I feel she needs the space to be someone new. -
